Snow White and the Huntsman

Snow White and the Huntsman- PG-13

By Jonathan Goodsell
I knew what the plot was before I even sat down, or drove up I guess since I saw it at a drive-in, but who didn't; It's just the classic tale of Snow White. Jealous Queen and a beautiful princess, princess escapes Queen and Queen wants princess back, something about approx. 7 little dwarves and a poison apple, and somehow it all magically appears in a happy ending; go figure that one. Anyone who's seen the Disney version as a kid (or as an adult watching with your kid for that matter) would know what to expect going into Snow White and the Huntsman.
Starring Charlize Theron as the evil Queen and Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman gave me decent hopes for this movie, though the star of Kristen Stewart as Snow White made me slightly skeptical. Outside of the Twilight Sage, Stewart hasn't yet successfully opened a movie. Yet she finally broke the spell with SW&H (my new abbreviation for the movie in question I'm reviewing) which did pretty decent in the box office holding the top for two weeks I believe. Yet her acting, as ever, still left a lot to be desired. For most of the movie she carried that zoned-out look she usually has. Who knows, maybe someday she'll improve, but not for SW&H. Now Chris Hemsworth acting for the Huntsman was rather impressive. I was worried that Thor would have pulled him in and taken over his career like Harry Potter did to Daniel Radcliffe. Yet I was extremely enthralled to see him break out of the bond and prove he can do other parts, and do them rather well. Charlize Theron did a good job like she always does.
The plot and script left a lot to be desired. The whole show seemed to jump around a lot and left a lot unexplained. I sat confused for a lot of the movie. The script was extremely weak also. I think I heard Stewart say maybe dozen words in the whole first hour. The whole show was extremely dark and intense, definitely not a show for kids. The Dark Forest was a huge scene of Deja vu  from the Disney classic. I will give credit to the countless battle scenes. They were very well done and almost enjoyable to watch, especially when the dwarves were involved. Though with Hemsworth's fighting style in the film, I almost expected to hear him call out for his hammer.
This movie was deserving of the PG-13 rating. There are several intense fight scenes throughout the film. In two particular battles against the queen's army, all the soldiers explode into black crystals when hit with a sword, so not really gory, but still kind of gruesome. The queen also sucks out the youth of several young girls in the film. The whole show is dark and depressing, it would be extremely terrifying to young kids. Language though was virtually nonexistent, worthy of PG on that matter. There are also a few moments that are inappropriate, especially for younger kids to watch. You see the Queen walk into a bath tub (nothing explicit scene yet it's rather revealing and suggestive), both the Queen and Snow White wear revealing clothing throughout, etc. There is nothing explicit, but there are a small handful of scenes some would prefer to fast-forward through for sure.
In conclusion, this show was alright. It definitely could have been better. The acting was decent, yet the story line needed work and a revised script couldn't hurt. But it's worth seeing once, it's a decently enjoyable film. So in my reviewer opinion, SW&H is getting a respectable 6/10
