Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl- PG-13

By Jonathan Goodsell
This was an absolute classic from the start. The first of a 3-to-many franchise, Pirates tells of the adventures of Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley), and Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) as they track down a cursed pirate crew led by Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush).
I guess what I loved the most with this film, besides from Johnny Depp's acting, was the creativity and obvious fun Disney had with this production. All the way through, it's just an enjoyable movie. Now, back to Depp. He's always been a good actor, neigh, a great actor. But he's usually a little weird, and this is no exception. His portrayal of Jack Sparrow was quite stunning and very hilarious. I honestly think the movie wouldn't have been the same without him. Bloom and Knightley both did decent jobs at their characters; though they obviously get better as the franchise goes on, even though the movies don't. This movie had just the right mixture of humor and action to work. I loved it. The plot was rather well done; complex yet surprisingly simple. I wasn't bored at all throughout the movie, it always left you wanting just a little bit more. Disney really was able to pull off yet another classic.
The movie was actually pretty clean. Very little language, if any. There was plenty of violence between the pirates, some of it slightly disturbing. The cursed pirates could be rather frightening to some. Overall though, for a PG-13 it wasn't that bad. As it is a movie about pirates, there is plenty of talk and some drinking of rum, though mostly in humerus ways.
I loved this film, I know plenty of others that loved it too. It's another Disney classic. So in my reviewer opinion, Pirates gets a well earned 7.5/10
